Devon’s Cinnamon Rolls

In honor of Father’s Day, I’m sharing the recipe for Devon’s super decadent Cinnamon Rolls. We (actually just Devon) made them for our Father’s day brunch today and they turned out wonderfully.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!!!

Prep time: 2 hours
Cook time: 25 minutes

  1. Put 1 cup milk and 1/4th cup shortening(or butter) in a large glass bowl (although any large microwaveable bowl should be fine.)
  2. Microwave until butter melts
  3. Add 1/4 cup sugar, 2 tsp salt and 1 additional cup of milk
  4. In another bowl combine: 1/4 cup lukewarm water, 1/2 tsp sugar, 2 packages of yeast (or, i think, a little less than 2 tsp, but check to make sure) Allow to proof. (Let sit until you see a bunch of air bubbles)
  5. Make sure milk mixture is still lukewarm, but not hot. Mix the two bowls together.
  6. Gradually add 5 to 6 cups of flour, until you get a soft dough. Let dough rise and then kneed. Roll out dough into a large rectangle on a floured counter.
  7. Mix together filling in another bowl: 2 cups Brown sugar, 2 Tbsp Cinnamon, 1/2 tsp Nutmeg, 1 cup raisins, 1 cup chopped walnuts. (Devon is usually pretty generous when adding these ingredients)
  8. Spread the sugar mixture evenly over the whole piece of rolled out dough. (You should still be able to see the dough through this coating, but still enough added, so it doesn’t look skimpy.)
  9. Then drizzle the butter evenly over the dough.
  10. Roll the rectangle up into a fat log and then cut it up into 1/12ths.
  11. Place in a greased pan, leaving a little extra room between them (we use a lasagna type pan, maybe 9″x14″?)
  12. Pre-Heat oven to 350 F. Cover pan, place in warm place if possible and let them rise to double their original size. (*its super important that you don’t skip this step*)
  13. Bake for around 25 minutes, or until they look golden.

For icing, mix a half to a whole bag of powdered sugar with as much milk as needed to make the consistency about as thick as honey.

Pour icing over cinnamon rolls while they are still cooling in the pan.

Yeah…I gotta hand it to Devon…he’s got these things down….they’re awesome!….however, as with any great recipe from Gourmet, Bon Appetit or Martha Stewart…you need to include at the end of the recipe the “serving suggestions” for these ultra-dense-intense-buttery “love handle starter kits”. I’ll give it a shot for you…here goes:

Use a carbon-tungsten reinforced spatula to lift them out of the pan and place onto a plate. Serve garnished with 4-7 strips of bacon and a 3 oz. chunk of fresh churned butter. Goes great with a triple espresso and a difibrillator.

I knew there was a reason Father’s Day only comes once a year. ;-)
    Thank you Emma and Devon.

haha. Love handle starter kits! That should be the new name for the recipe! :) I also like your ideas on serving suggestions.
