What the 4th of July means to me.

Baking a fresh peach pie. Going to a big BBQ at a friend’s house who lives on a large piece of land with horses. Having half of the people at the BBQ bring crates of fireworks. Showing a 13 year old how to properly shoot off a roman candle. Having friends who make potato cannons. Having said friends bring said potato cannon to the BBQ and and then blow up watermelons with it. Grilling corn and chicken sausages. Building a big bonfire. Roasting marshmallows over the flames to make s’mores. People who have been drinking beer all day, setting off fireworks from 5pm until after we left the BBQ at 11.30pm. Waking up at 2am with food poisoning because I didn’t know how long it takes to grill a chicken sausage.

And that’s what the 4th of July means to me.

What the 4th of July means to me:

    1. “Two for one” fireworks from Phantom Fireworks.
    2. Having to be the alpha dog when the YOUNG adult males appear ready to set off fireworks all night long…
    3. Grilled animal flesh…even if it’s aquatic animals with fins… ;-)
    4. Watermelon!
    5. Family…whether in person or by phone.

What the 5th of July means to me:

    1. Spending an hour walking around the yard and driveway picking up shell casings from the 4th of July fireworks.
    2. Using the skimmer “fish net” to fish the shell casings out of the swimming pool…
    3. Leftover tiramisu.

Actually…no Invasion of Normandy this year…too many parachutes to pick up the next day. ;-)

This year we had Alien Abduction, Red White & Boom, and one other enormous one that Seth bought that was the one that ended up in the pool…oh, and 100′s of smaller hand-thrown ones. One that I found particularly amusing was the one that I called “Sparking Spinning Ball of Death”…no matter where they threw them, they kept rolling back towards the 3 full gasoline cans in the barn. :-(
