Book ideas?

After realizing that all of the books in my “to-be read” pile are history non-fiction or depressing fiction about drug abuse and death, I decided that I need to read some happy books. I’m gonna head over to a bookstore later and I was wondering if you guys had any recommendations. I’m looking for something that isnt depressing and doesnt have scientific graphs in it. Fluff is fine, but I’d prefer something that isnt a stereotypical “chick-book” with an engagement ring on the cover.

So far, my purchase list has Neil Gaiman’s American Gods (which i’ve already read and loved, but dont have my copy of it anymore) and Christian Jacq’s The Flaming Sword (he’s a French egyptologist who writes fictional stories about ancient Egypt.)

Any more ideas?

I’d recommend a book about lepers, or possibly an internment camp…. Uplifting stuff like that….

I’m reading “The TIme Traveler’s Wife” which is oddly good. :) It’s a bit of a chick book, but it’s entertaining and fairly well thought out, and different.

kristin – i’m sorry, i must have forgot to mention that i dont read crap. :) hehe. But seriously. you know my feelings on harry potter. :)

MB – I’ll look into that book. Sometimes I really like chick books.. its just the ones with the wedding rings on the cover that i can’t stand. :) Thanks!

How about “A Cook’s Tour: In Search of the Perfect Meal?” It’s the new one by Anthony Bourdain, the guy who wrote “Kitchen Confidential.” Might be a good book to read to help you prepare for your upcoming trip to the south of France…..;-) There’s also the “A Year in Provence,” by Peter Mayle….

OOh. I’ve been meaning to read “A year in Provence”, but I keep forgetting about it.. I’ll put it on my list of books to buy. :)
