Eurway Furniture

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

Some day, when D and I own our own home and we’re fabulously independently wealthy, I want to decorate our home with some cool modern stuff from Eurway. Especially this snoogley step framed bed or something similar and this stainless steel curved bar. Me like.

Of course we’d need disco balls to hang from the ceiling above the bar… In addition to a padlock to protect against lemur raids.

For now I’ll just keep drooling. :)

Best Facebook group ever.

So for the un-tech-savy Facebook.com is a social networking site similar to myspace.com. You get a profile and can add your friends who are also on the site to your network. You also have the option to join a plethora of groups depending on your interests.

Examples of some of the ones that I belong to: “I went to a public high school… b****”, “Audi drivers do it best”, “Voss water tastes better cause it’s from Norway”, ” Stewart and Colbert 2008“.

Anyways. I came across one today that had me trying really hard to keep from spitting my cappuccino onto the computer screen.

“Wilst my friends have babies and mortgages, I have hangovers and 100 shoes.”

And the group has over 5000 members. I love it.

Recipe: Peanut-y Soba Noodles with Chicken and Cucumber

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

Ever order delicious peanut noodles from your favorite local Thai Take-out place? I found this recipe in Gourmet Magazine’s June 2007 issue. It’s absolutely amazing and super delicious. I totally recommend it if you’re into peanut-y noodle goodness.

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound chicken cutlets or tenders
  • 1 pound soba noodles
  • 1 seedless cucumber (usually plastic-wrapped)
  • 2/3 cup creamy peanut butter (not natural)
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce 1 tablespoon Asian sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons Chinese chile garlic paste (preferably Lan Chi) or Sriracha (Southeast Asian chile sauce) plus additional for serving
  • 1/4 cup chopped scallions

Directions:

Cut chicken into 1/2-inch-wide strips, then cook in a 5- to 6-quart pot of boiling salted water, stirring occasionally, until just cooked through, 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer chicken with a slotted spoon to a bowl (drain any excess liquid), reserving water in pot.

Return water to a boil, then cook noodles, stirring occasionally, until just tender, 4 to 8 minutes. Reserve 3/4 cup noodle-cooking water and drain noodles in a colander. Rinse noodles under cold water to stop cooking, then drain well.

While noodles cook, cut cucumber lengthwise into julienne strips, slicing until you reach core, then rotating cucumber a quarter turn, continuing to slice and rotate until left with nothing but core. Pat dry.

Whisk together peanut butter, soy sauce, sesame oil, chile paste, and reserved cooking water until smooth.

Divide noodles among large serving bowls. Spoon about 1/4 cup peanut sauce over noodles in each bowl, then divide chicken, cucumber, and scallions among bowls. Serve immediately with remaining sauce and additional chile paste. Stir noodles just before eating.

Bad squirrel mom.

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Today I had a shift at the Wildlife Center. At the beginning of every shift we have a meeting to find out about what new animals we’ve admitted.

Apparently one of the senior rehabilitators had a family of squirrels living in her yard and the momma squirrel wasn’t being super responsible. The rehabilitator would find baby squirrels lying in her yard, cold and covered in fleas. She would put the beh-beh squirrels into a makeshift nest attached to the tree that the lived in and eventually the mom would come back and collect them. But then a day or two later, the woman would find the baby squirrels lying in her yard again, cold and sick. So after a few rounds of this she ended up bringing the baby squirrels into the center.

We joked that the momma squirrel must have been the Britney Spears of mother squirrels. hehe. It’s so true.

Fyi, the baby squirrels are now being raised with us. We de-flea-ed them, they are fed regularly, they are kept warm, and they get to snuggle with each other. Hopefully we’ll be able to release them back into the wild as soon as they are big enough to survive on their own. :)
