What the world eats.

Saturday, June 16th, 2007

Time Magazine Online has a really interesting photo collection on what families around the world eat in a week. I find it facinating.

The poorer families spend little money on raw ingredients, while wealthy families in industrialized nations spend crazy amounts of money on mostly pre-packaged and fast foods. Its also amazing to see how little some large families survive on.  Interestingly (but not surprisingly) some of the wealthy families buy almost no fresh produce. Its crazy. And the amount of soda that some families buy is ridiculous.

Viewing the slide show makes me want to go out and fill up an entire shopping cart with fresh produce and raw ingredients.

8 facts.

Tuesday, June 12th, 2007

This is going to be hard because I ramble about my silly little facts and habits on my blog. But I was tagged by Jo Annie at Neverending Growth, so here i go.
the directions

“Each player posts eight random facts/habits about him/herself and then tags eight other bloggers to participate. In turn, the folks who are tagged write a post listing their own eight facts/habits, along with these rules, and then tag eight more people . . . and so on.

Each blogger must list the eight people they are tagging, and visit their sites, leaving a comment notifying them that they have been tagged and inviting them to read your entry.”

8 random facts about me:

1. I chew the inside of my mouth sometimes and don’t realize that I’m doing it.

2. I’ve started to become fascinated with baby birthing shows, but I’m still skeptical about the whole “having kids” thing.

3. When I swam in pools as a kid, I thought the black stripes at the bottom were sharks.

4. I put off cleaning until stuff looks pretty grungy, but then I go on a crazy cleaning spree until everything is sparking.

5. I’m still stung by horrible things that were said to me in elementary school…

6. But I think that it makes me a stronger and more empathetic person.

7. I don’t think I can tell the difference between HD and regular tv.

8. I’m happy and frightened about possibly moving back to Boston this year.

Volunteering to help baby racca-mundis.

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

I signed up and interviewed to start volunteering at my local P.A.W.S. Wildlife Center. Starting next Thursday I’ll be doing weekly morning shifts as a Wildlife Care Assistant. It’s seems like a bunch of grunt work: cleaning and laundry and whatnot. But the highlight is that I’ll get to feed orphaned baby mammals, like squirrels and raccons. It will look like this: :)

Feeding baby squirrels

Adorable, no?
I went and toured the facility yesterday, and got to watch one of the volunteers feeding a baby squirrel. It was amazingly cute! They are all cute and furry, and start squeakily-grunting when they see their breakfast syringes. The Center takes in all sorts of orphaned and hurt wildlife. They even have 2 seal pups who I got to check out. They were loud and stinky and trying to escape from their outdoor pools. Naughty seal pups. :)

I’m looking forward to Thursdays. :)

Fiat Idea Adventure – Iguana

Best “iguana destroying a city” car commercial ever! It hails from Brazil, so it’s in Portuguese, but I think you’ll be able to get the jist of it. Go mutant iguanas!

Gearhead…. kinda

I am the best tire PSI checker ever. Like, seriously. I totally rock.
That is all.

The birthday secret.

Friday, June 1st, 2007

So yesterday D told me to be ready to go somewhere at 3pm yesterday.

At 3pm town car picked me up and then dropped me off at Ummelina Spa, my most favorite-ist spa in the world. I proceeded to get my spa on. When I was done, Devon was waiting for me, and took me to a restaurant that I’ve been wanting to try for a while, Troiani. They had the table all decorated with a Happy Birthday card and streamers and everything. Dinner was totally yummy. Then we came home, where i had to wait in the hallway for a few minutes. When I was allowed into the kitchen, I saw this:

My 25th birthday cake.

Devon had snuck home early to bake me a cake, and decorated it with Senor Lemur and Miss Fifi.He did a really awesome job! D totally needs to be on the show “Ace of Cakes“. Although another wonderful aspect of it is that the candles say that I’m turning 21. :) My man rocks. Period. :)

I was totally happy with having the best birthday ever, but then I look over and see a suspicious looking little blue box. Upon further investigation, it is indeed a box from Tiffany & co. I’ve never had the pleasure of owning anything by them, and Devon really did an awesome job of picking out the piece that he did. Its a silver mesh V-shaped necklace that ties in the back, rather than having a clasp. Its really beautiful, with a smidgen of punk rock.

But yeah. Devon is totally out of control. I wasn’t expecting all this. It was a really great birthday.. Although I would have been more than happy with a super sized meal from McDonald’s and a candle in one of their apple pies. :)
