The results of the Shoreline PetCo Halloween Pet Costume Contest are in!

Last year Fifi’s dragon costume came in Honorable Mention, or 4th Place. This year, we decided to give her costume a theme and make a tribute to the late Steve Irwin, Crocodile Hunter. I present to you, Fifi as the Crocodile Hunter’s Crocodile!

Fifi's 2006 Halloween costume: Steve Irwin's crocodile

Fifi was awarded 3rd place and a $5 gift certificate. We would have also gotten a goodie bag, but they only had ones for cats and dogs.

We were trumphed by a very spastic cat dressed as a skeleton who won 2nd place and a really cute, big dog dressed as WonderWoman, complete with her golden lariot who walked away with first place. Devon thinks that we were robbed and has been trash-talking the cat’s costume since we left, saying that it was poorly constructed and didn’t even have a good story behind it. I’m only letting it go because the cat’s owner was 8 and looked like he had handsewn the costume. :)

Here are some pictures of Fifi’s costume process.

The Olympic Peninsula

Friday, October 27th, 2006

On Thursday, Devon and I took the ferry over to Kingston on Bainbridge Island and drove over to La Push on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula and Pacific Ocean.

It was about a 4 hour drive each way and we detoured to Port Townsend on the way out and back for meals. We also stopped at Lake Crescent, which is the large lake below Joyce on the map. It was a dark and cloudy day, but it was still amazingly beautiful over there. I think the water in Crescent lake is the clearest I’ve ever seen.

Logging is the big… or rather only industry over there and it was a little sad to see. It seems like the loggers now replant the land that they take from, but its still a bit eerie to see huge plots of land with no trees taller than me that are bordered on all sides by massive evergreens.

Anyways. The national parks were beautiful and I definately want to go back and explore when we have have a few days instead of a few hours.

I took some pictures here. And Devon took a TON of way more beautiful pictures that he’ll post on Digitalsanctuary, hopefully soon.

Persepolis 2 by Marjane Satrapi

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

I recently finished Persepolis 2 (the story of a return) by Marjane Satrapi. I havn’t had the chance to read the 1st Persepolis yet, but I really enjoyed reading the second book in this collection of memoirs. It is told in the form of Graphic Novel…. aka. comic book style… It is the story of Marjane as a Iranian teenager in Vienna fleeing her Iranian homeland’s war with Iraq. She basically starts hanging out with a group of outsiders and pretends to smoke a lot of pot. After high school she returns to Iran to go to an art college and falls in love with a Iranian soldier who she ends up marrying. Soon after she marries this man she realizes that she could never enjoy the life of a progressive Iranian wife.
Part of me enjoyed this book… Part of me really wanted to smack some sense into the author. But either way, i enjoyed the book.

Ghetto house update.

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Remember this ghetto house in my neighborhood that is up on blocks?

It’s gotten even more ghetto in the last month. It’s now going for some sort of record for the tallest 1 story house ever.

Wicked tall and wicked ghetto.

The house is now about a story off of the ground. Also notice how the supports on the left kind of curve in off-balance like. And for some added bizarreness, the electricity cables are still hooked up to the house from the powerlines.
Yeah. I’m kind of dumb founded. Why would you do that to a house????

I have no idea…

Fifi’s Halloween costume, in progress.

Monday, October 16th, 2006

So today we ventured out to the Toys R Us store where we were surprised to see some amazingly well behaved kids… I guess only good kids get rewarded with trips to the toy store. :)

Anyways. We found a World War II action figure that is going to work as a Steve Irwin doll substitute for Fifi’s Steve Irwin tribute costume!

Elite Force - WWII US Army 82nd Airborne

It doesn’t look much like him now, but I’ll be cutting off the arms of the jacket and making the pants into shorts, taking off the ammo belt and painting his brown hair yellow… I just loved the expression on the figure’s face so much, that I knew this one had to be the one!

The weak-ass “Zorro” chihuahua pup is sooo going down this year!

On Saturday, October 28th, at 2pm, it’s SO on.

New Masterpiece.

Monday, October 16th, 2006

I call this piece “Thanks mom and dad, for my tuition to art school.” (copyright Emma Hillard 2006, crayon on paper tablecloth at Macaroni Grill)
Thanks mom and dad for my tuition to art school.

Yes, one of Fifi’s legs is longer than her body… Sigh…. It was the bad angle, I swear…

Crank and an awesome ringtone.

Sunday, October 15th, 2006

CrankLast night I watched the movie Crank with Jason Statham(the guy from the Transporter). Great fricking movie! Even if the story was kinda weak…. weak as in Statham’s character is injected by some drug which will kill him unless he can keep his heart rate jacked up. So he ends up running around being an adrenaline junky, taking lots of stimulants, starting fights with gangs and the police, stealing stuff and generally just being a menace.

The cinematography was pretty awesome. Lots of bright color saturation and whatnot. I loved it.

What I loved even more was the ringtone that the main character had on his cell phone… A regular cell phone ring that got progressively slower and lower pitched. Like its battery was running out… I liked it so much that I made Devon find it and upload it to my phone as my new ringtone. And I’m someone who has never downloaded a ringtone before and generally considers most of them to be horribly annoying. But yeah this one is awesome!
